What are CBD Bath Bombs?
CBD bath bombs are balls you add to your bath water for a nice, relaxing fizzy sensation. They are usually made with a combination of cannabidiol (CBD), Essential Oils, and fragrance. Some will add fun colors into the mix as well. The benefit of bath bombs is that they deliver the healing and skin health properties of CBD directly to your skin. How Do CBD Bath Bombs Work?
CBD bath bombs work by adding them to your warm bath water. Once they encounter the water, they begin fizzing, releasing the CBD, essential oils, and fragrance from the ball into the bath water where it creates a pleasant experience, and allows the oils and other ingredients to penetrate the skin. This means you get to enjoy the healing benefits of CBD as well as its skin-enhancing benefits by direct contact. It’s important to know that while CBD and THC are both derived from the same plant, CBD does not make you high. Users don’t worry about unexpected side effects, or impairments resulting from using CBD bath bombs or other CBD products. You will experience no psychoactive mental changes as a result of using CBD bath bombs.
CBD's Skin-Soothing Benefits
CBD is most commonly taken internally, and oral CBD products boast a long list of potential benefits, from calming the mind to easing physical pain. Topical CBD products have similar benefits, but because they're absorbed directly through the skin they may be more useful for targeting certain discomforts. For instance, joint and muscle pain or skin irritation may respond better to a topical application, like a muscle rub, salve, or CBD bath bomb.
Unlike most topicals, though, CBD bath bombs make it easy to apply a powerful dose to the entire body without layering yourself in creams. The reasons why someone may use CBD in their bath varies, but some reasons may include:
- Soothing physical discomforts
- Balancing irritated, inflamed skin
- Reducing discomfort from tension or tension headaches
- Aiding muscle recovery after workouts
CBD bath bombs safety and side effects
While the World Health OrganizationTrusted Source says CBD is generally considered to be safe, some people may experience side effects, including:
- fatigue
- diarrhea
- changes in appetite
- changes in weight
It’s a good idea to talk with your doctor or clinician before trying CBD, especially if you’re taking any medications, as CBD may interact with some medications.
It’s also important to use caution with any new-to-you topical product. You want to be careful to look at the ingredients to make sure you don’t have any allergies. Keep in mind that essential oils may irritate sensitive skin.
Some people worry that a CBD bath bomb might irritate their vagina and/or urethra. If that’s something you’re nervous about, keep in mind that it’s best to use products on or around your vulva that are dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic, and fragrance-free.
How to use CBD bath bombs
Most bath bombs have a “bombs away!” approach. Simply drop the bomb in your tub of water and soak.
But keep in mind, these are not ordinary bath bombs. It’s a good idea to pay attention to the product’s potency before getting your feet wet (pun intended!).
Ideal doses differ from person to person, depending on several factors, like body weight, body chemistry, the condition being treated, and the CBD concentration in each product.
If you’re new to CBD, it may be best to look for the lowest dose bath bomb to start.
Pro tip: remember to unbox and unwrap the bath bomb before you get into the tub — they’re shrink-wrapped in plastic and usually require scissors to open!

This recipe should make 6 bath bombs. If the recommended CBD potency is used, each bath bomb will contain approximately 25 mg of CBD.
You will need:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup citric acid
- 1/2 cup Epsom salt or sea salt
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
- 1 tsp water
- 3 mL (3 full droppers) of CBD oil tincture (preferably high potency, at least 50mg per ml.
- 10-15 drops of organic essential oils (see next section for fragrance combination ideas)
- Bath bomb molds or silicone cupcake pan
How to Make CBD Bath Bombs:
- Combine baking soda, salt, cornstarch, and citric acid in a medium bowl, and mix until consistent.
- In a second bowl, mix coconut oil, CBD oil or tincture, essential oils, and water.
- Slowly combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients, stirring it until fully combined. Adding the ingredients slowly will prevent your ingredients from beginning to fizz.
- Once completed, the mixture should be mostly dry, but moist enough to clump together when packed.
- Working quickly so the mixture doesn't dry out, pack it into the mold of your choice. Press firmly so that the bath bombs are compacted.
- Allow the bath bomb to set in a mold for one hour.
- Remove from mold and allow to dry for at least 24 hours before using.
