What is Epsom salt?

Epsom salt is also known as magnesium sulfate. It’s a chemical compound made up of magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen.
Despite its name, Epsom salt is a completely different compound than table salt. It was most likely termed “salt” because of its chemical structure.
It has an appearance similar to table salt and is often dissolved in baths, which is why you may also know it as “bath salt.” While it looks similar to table salt, its taste is distinctly different. Epsom salt is quite bitter and unpalatable.
Some people still consume it by dissolving the salt in water and drinking it. However, due to its taste, you probably don’t want to add it to food.

How Do They Work?

In water, they break down into magnesium and sulfate. The theory is that when you soak in an Epsom salts bath, these get into your body through your skin. That hasn't been proven, but just soaking in warm water can help relax muscles and loosen stiff joints.

People use Epsom salts baths as a home treatment for:

  • Arthritis pain and swelling
  • Bruises and sprains
  • Fibromyalgia, a condition that makes your muscles, ligaments, and tendons hurt, and causes tender points throughout your body
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Insomnia
  • Psoriasis, a disease that causes red, itchy, scaly skin
  • Sore muscles after working out
  • Soreness from diarrhea during chemotherapy
  • Sunburn pain and redness
  • Tired, swollen feet

While there are plenty of folk remedy claims, there aren't a lot of studies to back them up. Taking this type of bath probably won't hurt you, but if you have health concerns, check with your doctor first.

How to Take an Epsom Salts Bath

The water should be very warm -- not hot, but comfortable to the touch. Add the Epsom salts while the water is running to help them dissolve.

For a standard-sized tub, use the amount suggested on the package, usually 1 to 2 cups, or the amount recommended by your doctor. Don't use Epsom salts in a hot tub, whirlpool, or other tub with jets unless the manufacturer says it's OK.

Keep the part of your body that hurts in the water for at least 12 minutes. Just relax.

Check with your doctor about how long and how often you should soak. You may need to do it just once for an ingrown toenail, or every day if you have arthritis pain.

How long can you stay in a bath with Epsom salts?

Soak for 15-20 minutes.  During this time, meditate or do your diaphragmatic breathing.  Listen to a meditation app or turn on some relaxing music.  If you prefer silence, enjoy the silence.  Epsom salt baths are extremely detoxing, hence why it is recommended to “start low and go slow”.  If you soak for much longer, you may start to reabsorb the toxins that your body has excreted out.

Remember to rehydrate afterwards.  You sweat a lot in a hot bath, you do not realise how much you are sweating as you are submerged in water.  Similarly to swimming for exercise.

How Often You Can Take Epsom Salt Baths

to get the most out of your Epsom salt bath, consider adding this to your bath three times a week. For your comfort, don’t eat right before or after the bath and be sure to drink water in the time around your bath to keep yourself hydrated. While Epsom salt hydrates your skin, it can dehydrate you to varying degrees. Spruce up your water with some citrus or fruit if you want to enhance the spa-like quality of your bath!
There are a lot of benefits to taking these types of baths, but there are also Epsom salt bath side effects that you’ll need to be aware of to make sure you enjoy it safely and to the fullest. First of all, be careful to never ingest the bath water. This could cause severe diarrhea that could lead to discomfort and dehydration. Epsom salts could also cause allergic reactions, so be aware of all your skin sensitivities before bathing. If you experience any skin irritation or itchiness after use, stop. If you have an open wound or severe burn, the Epsom salt could also cause discomfort.
